A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck Kern County on Tuesday evening, with its epicenter located in Lamont, California, near Bakersfield, the US Geological Survey reported. The seismic event occurred at 9:09 p.m. PT, and was followed by several aftershocks.
The tremor was felt widely across Los Angeles and extended into Orange County.
Following the initial quake, over a dozen aftershocks were recorded, with the strongest being a 4.5 magnitude and another at 4.1. Both aftershocks were centered close to the original earthquake’s location.
Ongoing seismic activity continues to affect the Grapevine area, situated between Santa Clarita, north of Los Angeles, and Kern County, according to the USGS.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office informed KABC7 Los Angeles that there have been no reports of damage in Los Angeles County. Despite this, the Los Angeles Fire Department has initiated earthquake preparedness protocols.
