Woman Killed by Crocodile While Bathing in Indonesian River

Additional Coverage:

An American crocodile bit a man in the Florida Everglades, as detailed in a recent news video. Meanwhile, a tragic incident occurred in eastern Indonesia where a woman lost her life to a crocodile attack while swimming in a river.

The 54-year-old victim, Halima Rahakbauw, was attacked by the reptile in Wali village on the Maluku islands. She was collecting clams earlier that day.

Neighbors initiated a search when Rahakbauw didn’t return home. After discovering a sandal and a body part in the river, they alerted the police.

Authorities then killed the crocodile and retrieved portions of Rahakbauw’s body from inside the animal. The local police shared that the crocodile measured approximately thirteen feet in length.

However, the exact species of the crocodile was not identified.

This recent incident echoes a pattern, following another case days earlier in Australia, where human remains were found inside a large crocodile suspected of attacking a tourist. The region of Indonesia, known for frequent crocodile attacks on humans, has witnessed several fatal encounters. A tin miner in Sumatra and a scientist in Sulawesi were among the recent victims.

This attack follows recent deadly encounters with pythons in Indonesia, including multiple incidents of women being fatally attacked by these snakes.
