Drone Strike Ignites Fire at Russian Military Airfield

Additional Coverage:

Early Thursday, a significant blaze was reported at a Russian military airfield following a drone attack, according to officials. Social media from Russia displayed videos of substantial fires and dense smoke emanating from the Marinovka airfield near Volgograd in southern Russia, an attack verified by the area’s governor.

Governor Andrey Bocharov indicated that although the drones were intercepted and shot down, one crashed and ignited a fire. Additional footage shared on social media captured the sound of gunfire and subsequent explosions around the air base during the alleged attack.

This incident is part of what appears to be Ukraine’s focused strategy of targeting Russian airfields amid ongoing conflicts. Last week, Ukraine executed its largest drone attack of the conflict, hitting four airfields in western Russia, and recently targeted an airfield near Murmansk in the far north within the Arctic Circle.

In related developments, a major fire continues to rage at a vast fuel storage site in Russia’s southern Rostov region. The fire has been uncontrolled for five days following a drone strike. Videos show massive clouds of black smoke and ongoing explosions from the facility’s fuel tanks, with one clip capturing firefighters retreating as a tank bursts.

This story is still unfolding, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
