Gabby Giffords and Sen. Mark Kelly Commend Harris at DNC

Additional Coverage:

Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, who suffered a traumatic brain injury from a gunshot wound in 2011, advocated passionately for Vice President Kamala Harris during the Democratic convention’s climax, proclaiming Harris capable of overcoming the gun lobby. Giffords’ political career was on the rise when she narrowly survived an assassination attempt that tragically killed six and injured several others at a community event in Tucson, Arizona.

After retiring from Congress in 2012 to prioritize her recovery, Giffords has since become a prominent gun control activist. Despite ongoing challenges with speech, her presentation on the event’s final evening showed significant improvement.

Giffords expressed heartfelt gratitude towards President Biden for his ongoing support and lauded Harris for her resilience and determination, emphasizing, “Kamala can beat the gun lobby.”

The convention that evening also highlighted other gun violence survivors, including a Sandy Hook teacher and a parent from the Uvalde school shooting. Giffords was joined by her husband, Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, who humorously remarked on the challenge of speaking after his wife and singer Pink. Senator Kelly, a former astronaut who was elected in a pivotal Senate race for Arizona, used his address to focus on foreign policy concerns, criticize former President Trump, and commend Harris for her leadership on military and democratic issues.

Kelly, reelected in 2022, had been previously considered as a potential vice-presidential candidate for Harris before the selection was finalized with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. His name has also surfaced in discussions about potential successors to President Biden.
