U.S. Slaps New Sanctions on Hundreds of Russian Individuals, Entities

Additional Coverage:

On August 23, the U.S. Treasury Department escalated its response to Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine by sanctioning nearly 400 additional individuals and entities. This expansion builds on existing measures targeting the economic networks supporting Russia’s war efforts.

These intensified sanctions focus particularly on disrupting the military-industrial complex of President Vladimir Putin’s administration, along with its international supply chains and internal economic structures supporting the war. Key areas affected include financial technology, ammunition procurement, various military suppliers, jet fighter production networks, and machine tool procurement.

Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo emphasized the role of Russia’s economy as a component of the Kremlin’s military operation. He highlighted the ongoing commitment of President Biden and G7 leaders to cripple Russia’s military base supplies and financial operations.

The administration’s strategy includes targeting extensive transnational networks that provide logistical and material support to Russia’s military operations. Also, the sanctions aim to obstruct Russian oligarchs from bypassing previous sanctions and disrupt efforts by Russian cyber operatives to sidestep restrictions.

Further economic constraints include limitations on Russia’s potential revenues from future metals and mining ventures, clamping down on Russian gold laundering practices, and exerting pressure on Russian financial technology firms.

The Treasury also warned international regulators and financial institutions about the risks involved in engaging with foreign branches or subsidiaries of Russian banks, cautioning against the establishment of new Russian financial entities that have not yet been sanctioned.

A detailed list outlining the newly imposed sanctions was released by the Treasury Department, underscoring its firm stance in supporting Ukraine and holding Russia accountable for its belligerent actions.
