Dump Truck Crashes Into Maine Covered Bridge, Plunges Into River

Additional Coverage:

In Gorham, Maine, a dump truck driver encountered a significant mishap after attempting to cross a historic covered bridge, Babb’s Bridge, which dates back to 1840 and was restored in 1976 following a fire. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon when the truck, heavily laden with crushed stone, fell through the bridge into the Presumpscot River, creating a truck-shaped hole in the structure.

The driver sustained minor injuries; however, the bridge did not fare as well. According to officials, the bridge, which has a 3-ton weight limit, may need to be closed for several months for repairs.

The truck far exceeded this limit, prompting Paul Merrill, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Transportation, to note that the vehicle’s weight was “multiple times” the permissible amount. The accident took place as the truck was transitioning from Gorham to Windham.

Authorities from the Gorham Police Department have stated that the incident is still under investigation. Attempts to contact the driver for comments have so far been unsuccessful.
