Rice University Student Fatally Attacked in Dorm on First Day of Classes

A tragic incident occurred at Rice University in Texas, where a female student, Andrea Rodriguez Avila, was found dead on Monday. The suspected shooter, a man reported to have been in a romantic relationship with Avila, was also discovered deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities. This man was not affiliated with the university.

Rice University’s police were called to conduct a welfare check at approximately 4:30 p.m., upon which they discovered the bodies in Avila’s campus room. The discovery was reported by school president Reginald DesRoches, who assured the public that the campus was secure and posed no ongoing risk.

The Chief of Rice University Police, Clemente Rodriguez, indicated that a note found at the scene, believed to have been written by the suspect, attributed the violence to troubles in their relationship. Despite this assurance of safety, the university president expressed a somber tone, acknowledging the need to support students affected by this shocking incident.
