Rear Admiral Marc Miguez recently shared insights into the operational decisions concerning aggression towards the Houthis, stating that U.S. leadership opted against escalated military actions due to concerns over Iran’s potential response. During an online interview, Miguez revealed that although more assertive strategies were proposed, the U.S. National Command Authority chose more restrained measures.

As the commander overseeing the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group during its extended eight-month deployment in the Red Sea, Miguez was involved in defensive operations protecting commercial shipping lanes. He indicated that the group conducted seven targeted strikes against the Houthis while fending off drone and missile attacks against commercial vessels.

Following the Eisenhower’s deployment, the U.S. has sustained its presence in the region with the deployment of the Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln carrier strike groups amidst escalating regional tensions.

Miguez suggested the necessity for a stronger stance against the Houthis going forward. He emphasized the need for an integrated government strategy that not only includes military actions but also diplomatic and economic efforts to enhance maritime security and ensure the passage of global commerce, which relies heavily on this critical region.

The Houthis have stated that their attacks are aimed at ships associated with Israel; however, incidents involving vessels from various nations suggest broader targets. The situation escalated with a recent attack on a Greek-flagged oil tanker, provoking further concern over maritime security in the area.

Since completing his command, Miguez has assumed the role of Navy Chief of Legislative Affairs and has called for increased U.S. preparation against drone threats, a prominent challenge witnessed during his tenure in the Red Sea.

The Pentagon has yet to respond to inquiries regarding these developments.
