John Stamos Reveals He Was Expelled from Church of Scientology for Misconduct

Additional Coverage:

John Stamos, at 17, was enticed to check out the Church of Scientology, drawn partly by a girl from his acting class and partly by his admiration for John Travolta. Stamos shared during the “Friends in High Places” podcast that he was working at his father’s restaurant when the invitation came. Curious, he decided to attend the meeting held at the Scientology building on Hollywood Boulevard.

The visit was short-lived, as Stamos never progressed beyond one of the initial meetings. Upon arrival, he was introduced to an “E-Meter,” a device the church believes can read emotional states.

Stamos, feeling playful, began toying with the machine which did not sit well with the members there. His antics led to him being asked to leave the premises.

During the podcast, host Matt Friend humorously commented that Stamos might have been “too annoying” for the group, a sentiment the actor jovially agreed with. The church has not responded to his remarks.

Stamos also discussed his brief encounter with Scientology in his 2023 memoir, “If You Would Have Told Me.” In it, he recounts a peculiar moment when, after being ejected, a member named Mia handed him a stack of workbooks, encouraging him to read one that could “open [his] eyes to some amazing things.” However, the deeper probes during his visit about personal crimes, negative thoughts towards Scientology, and odd sexual questions left him feeling unsettled and ultimately unwelcome by the organization.
