First-Time Arby’s Visit Yields $38 Feast Enough for Three

Additional Coverage:

Our entire meal neatly fit on one tray.

During my initial visit to the Arby’s fast-food chain, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Known for its bold claim of having “the meats,” Arby’s lived up to its reputation, serving up delectable burgers. After sampling three different sandwiches, two side dishes, multiple sauces, and a cookie, Arby’s quickly became a new favored dining spot.

Having frequented various fast-food and fast-casual restaurants over the years, Arby’s had somehow escaped my radar. This oversight was corrected one afternoon last September when my mother and I decided to give Arby’s in Long Island, New York, a try. We thoroughly enjoyed the Smokehouse Brisket sandwich and the soft, warm chocolate chip cookie, among other items.

Moreover, the total cost of our meal was $38.56 after tax, which we found to be excellent value considering the amount of food we received (enough for three people). Checking the prices a year later on Arby’s website, I noted a slight increase to $39.22, influenced only by tax adjustments rather than a direct increase in menu prices.

Here’s what made our Arby’s visit memorable and why we plan to go back soon. Founded in Ohio in 1964 by the Raffel brothers, Arby’s has long been celebrated for its robust selection of meat sandwiches, a reputation they continue to uphold.

Despite the numerous fast-food joints I’ve visited, from McDonald’s to In-N-Out Burger, Arby’s was a notable omission. Upon realizing there was an Arby’s mere minutes from my childhood home, it felt like the perfect opportunity to finally experience it, inviting my mom along for the culinary exploration.

When we arrived around 3 p.m. on a Tuesday, the inside was quiet, though there were people at the drive-thru. We were greeted by the vaguely Western-themed décor, a nod to the chain’s originally intended name “Big Tex,” which had to be changed due to its prior use.

Ordering was an adventure in choices, especially with the sauces – ketchup, Horsey Sauce, Arby’s Sauce, Honey Dijon Mustard, and Spicy Three Pepper. I indulged by trying each one. Our order included medium curly fries, mozzarella sticks, a Classic Roast Beef sandwich, the Smokehouse Brisket, and a Crispy Chicken sandwich, along with a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup cookie and two sodas, totaling $38.

Each sandwich had its merits, particularly the Smokehouse Brisket, which was juicy and flavorful enough without any additional sauce. Conversely, the Classic Roast Beef was less impressive, somewhat dry and unremarkable compared to the other offerings.

The sides, curly fries, and mozzarella sticks were as expected, with the curly fries standing out as particularly enjoyable. We capped off the meal with the chocolate chip cookie with Reese’s, which, even slightly melted, was a delightful treat.

We concluded our visit feeling satisfied, both with the service and the meal. A bell at the exit invited guests to ring if they enjoyed their meal, a quaint touch according to an Arby’s post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Having sampled only a fraction of what Arby’s has to offer, I’m eager to return and delve deeper into the menu. For what we got, the price was more than reasonable, especially compared to what one might spend at a sit-down restaurant in New York City.

This first visit to Arby’s has made both my mom and me enthusiastic fans, eager to return and explore more of their substantial menu.
