Tom Brady Could Face Broadcast Limits if He Buys Stake in Raiders

Additional Coverage:

In May 2023, it was widely reported that retired NFL star Tom Brady was contemplating a move to become a limited partner with the Las Vegas Raiders. However, more than a year has passed, and his proposal remains unapproved.

According to Pro Football Talk, one sticking point is the highly favorable terms offered by Raiders owner Mark Davis, which other NFL owners frowned upon. Moreover, Brady’s recent role as a broadcaster for Fox has raised concerns among the owners regarding the types of access traditionally given to broadcasters.

NFL team owners are uneasy about the notion of a franchise part-owner having the same operational insights as other network broadcasters. This led the NFL to propose specific broadcast restrictions for Brady should his ownership take effect, which were discussed at a league meeting in Minneapolis. According to ESPN, a presentation highlighted constraints such as barring Brady from visiting other teams’ facilities, attending practices, or participating in broadcast production meetings—privileges commonly granted to broadcasters to enhance their game coverage.

Further, Brady would need to adhere to other league standards and policies applicable to team owners. This would include potential fines or suspensions for overly critical comments about game officials or other teams, compliance with the NFL’s gambling regulations, and adherence to the league’s strict anti-tampering rules, which allow only limited, casual interactions with members of other clubs.

The timing for a vote on Brady’s ownership bid is still uncertain, with the next potential opportunity for decision slated for October.
