BYU Defensive Coordinator Jay Hill Released from Hospital After Heart Attack

Additional Coverage:

PROVO, Utah — Jay Hill, BYU’s defensive coordinator and associate head coach, was released from the hospital this weekend after suffering a heart attack. Hill, 49, fell ill following a practice session on Thursday and was admitted to a medical facility in Utah County.

Despite his health scare, Hill appeared at the season-opening game for the Cougars against Southern Illinois at LaVell Edwards Stadium, though BYU head coach Kalani Sitake handled Hill’s usual sideline responsibilities.

Medical tests showed significant blockages in Hill’s arteries, leading to the placement of two stents through procedures on Friday and Saturday. This was after an angiogram indicated blockages of 60% and 100% in his arteries.

On social media platform X, Hill shared his surprise and gratitude, stating, “Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be having a heart attack at 49. I cannot thank the doctors, nurses and staff enough for their expertise, professionalism, and care. I have been since released from the hospital and I am feeling much better as I look forward to a fast recovery.”

Before his current role at BYU, which began in 2023, Hill was notably successful at Weber State, achieving a record of 68-39 as head coach and winning four Big Sky Conference titles consecutively from 2017 to 2021. His coaching career also includes a stint as a defensive assistant at the University of Utah under coaches Urban Meyer and Kyle Whittingham from 2001 to 2013. Hill is also an alumnus of the University of Utah, playing as a defensive back in 1998 and 1999.
