Four Dead, Including Gunman, in Hawaii Neighborhood Dispute

Additional Coverage:

A tragic neighborhood dispute in Waianae, Hawaii, escalated into a deadly shooting at a residential home on Saturday night, resulting in the deaths of three women and injuries to two others, local police reported. The shooter was subsequently killed by a resident of the home, who was then arrested on charges of second-degree murder.

During a family gathering, a 58-year-old man allegedly drove a front-end loader into cars at the home and began firing at people in the carport, killing three women at the scene, according to Honolulu Police Detective Lt. Deena Thoemmes at a press conference. The assailant was fatally shot by a 42-year-old male who lived in the house.

The motives for the resident’s arrest have not been disclosed as officials did not immediately provide further details regarding the incident.

Victims included three women, ages 34, 36, and 29. Two other people, a 31-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman, were hospitalized in critical condition.

Thoemmes noted that the aggressor had placed four 55-gallon drums filled with an unknown substance in the front-end loader, and there were reports of him shooting into these drums, although this has yet to be officially confirmed by police.

The incident is part of a series of shootings in the Waianae area, though Police Chief Joe Logan clarified that this event was unrelated to previous incidents, suggesting a specific, targeted escalation from a neighborhood conflict rather than a random act of violence. In response to the frequency of recent shootings, Logan stated that police commitments would increase, with intensified patrols and collaborations with federal agencies to bolster security in the region.

In the past week alone, Waianae has witnessed three separate shooting incidents, underscoring a troubling trend of gun violence in the area.
