A Texas deputy constable, Maher Husseini, was tragically killed while driving to work in a Houston intersection on Tuesday afternoon, according to law enforcement officials. The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. when a man approached Husseini’s SUV at a west Houston intersection and fired multiple shots, causing fatal injuries.

Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz reported that the deputy was off-duty and in civilian clothing at the time of the attack. Husseini had served with Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office since 2021, covering the South-Central District.

Authorities announced on Tuesday evening that a person of interest has been detained in Galveston, about 50 miles southeast of Houston. Details about the individual were not immediately provided.

Earlier descriptions from the police indicated they were searching for a suspect in his mid-30s to early 40s with dark, thinning hair, dressed in a dark shirt and pants, and driving a charcoal grey Chevy Impala with distinctive damage to its bumper.

The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, with authorities considering possibilities including targeted attack or road rage.

Chief Diaz expressed the gravity of the situation, noting the profound impact of losing a public servant in such a violent manner. Harris County Constable Mark Herman shared his grief in a statement, revealing that Deputy Husseini succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.

“The murder of one of our Precinct 4 deputies on his way to work today is deeply saddening,” Herman stated, highlighting the loss to the community and Husseini’s dedication to public service.
