Rich Homie Quan, the renowned Atlanta-based rapper celebrated for his trap hits “Type of Way” and “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” has passed away at the age of 34. According to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s confirmation to The Associated Press, he died at a hospital in Atlanta.

Quan, born Dequantes Devontay Lamar, passed away on Thursday. Details surrounding his death are still pending as an autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

During the mid-2010s, Quan emerged as a key figure in the hip-hop scene, initially gaining attention for his array of mixtapes. His major breakthrough came in 2013 with the hit single “Type of Way,” which attracted attention from other artists like Jeezy and Meek Mill who featured in its remix. He sustained his popularity by collaborating with YG and Jeezy, and through his participation in the Rich Gang rap group with notable artists such as Young Thug and Birdman, leading to the release of the successful track “Lifestyle.”

“Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” another major hit for Quan, was produced by DJ Spinz and Nitti Beatz, and reached No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He also featured on the popular track “$ave Dat Money” by Lil Dicky.

In 2018, Quan launched his first and only studio album, “Rich as in Spirit,” which featured minimal collaborations, except for the track “Think About It,” with Rick Ross.

In a 2022 interview with The Associated Press, Quan discussed coming back to the music scene after an unexpected break. He mentioned facing legal challenges with the independent label T.I.G.

(Think It’s a Game Record) but expressed readiness for a musical comeback. Around that time, Quan also addressed his relationship with former collaborator Young Thug, who faced legal issues of his own.

Quan emphasized that there were no hard feelings between them and expressed a willingness for reconciliation.

Quan reflected on the scrutiny faced by rappers from law enforcement, suggesting that the provocative display of weapons in music videos and on social media may contribute to this. He highlighted his cautious approach to storytelling in his music, stressing the artistic value and cultural significance of his work while acknowledging the challenges faced by artists in the industry.
