Doug Emhoff Admits He Can’t Win Debates Against Kamala Harris

Additional Coverage:

Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, have been married for a decade, sharing a background in law—Harris as attorney general and Emhoff in entertainment law. Recently, Emhoff appeared on the podcast “Pod Save America” and humorously admitted that he’s never won a debate against Harris.

In the episode released on Thursday, cohost Tommy Vietor questioned Emhoff about the upcoming presidential debate between Harris and former President Donald Trump. Vietor noted, “I assume no one has debated with her more than you have. What should we expect?”

Emhoff responded, “I haven’t won one,” underscoring Harris’s strong debate skills. He described Harris as a “great debater” and a “first-class trial lawyer,” sharing that their disagreements can sometimes feel like courtroom battles, with Harris setting up clever traps during discussions. Despite being a skilled trial lawyer himself, Emhoff confessed he often realizes too late what Harris is doing.

Before their entry into the political arena, Harris was the district attorney of San Francisco and later California’s attorney general, while Emhoff specialized in intellectual property and entertainment law at DLA Piper in Los Angeles. The couple celebrated their 10th anniversary in August at the Democratic National Convention, where Harris accepted the presidential nomination.

Harris is scheduled to debate Trump on September 10 in an event hosted by ABC News. The campaigns have had intense negotiations over the debate format and rules, such as whether microphones will be muted or not. Emhoff noted, “It’s Donald Trump, so who knows what’s going to happen, but I know she’ll be focused on talking about us, the American people.”
