Queen Elizabeth II Memorial to Be Held at St. James’ Park

On September 7th, the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee declared that the Queen Elizabeth II memorial will be established in St. James’s Park in London.

A photograph of Queen Elizabeth II, previously unreleased, was unveiled by Buckingham Palace during her Platinum Jubilee early last year.

The memorial will encompass a section of St. James’s Park next to The Mall at Marlborough Gate, extending to the land around a pathway leading to a nearby lake, which includes the Blue Bridge.

The BBC reported that the memorial is scheduled for unveiling by April 21, 2026, to mark the centenary of Queen Elizabeth II’s birth. Queen Elizabeth II passed away on September 8, 2022.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer remarked in a news release, “Queen Elizabeth II’s enduring legacy of service and devotion to our country will never be forgotten.” He added that St. James’s Park, “right in the heart of the capital,” will provide a place for the public to honor the late Queen and connect with the cherished shared history.

The committee selected this location due to its proximity to Buckingham Palace and statues of Queen Elizabeth II’s parents, King George VI and Queen Mother Elizabeth.

The memorial will celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s life and service to the United Kingdom, offering a place for visitors to “pause and reflect,” according to the committee’s press release.

The British government will back the proposed memorial projects and accept funding from England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Later this year, the committee will be seeking design proposals from architects, artists, and designers.
