Kremlin Expresses Frustration Over Debate

Additional Coverage:

During the first presidential debate, the Kremlin expressed strong displeasure towards Donald Trump and Kamala Harris for mentioning Russian President Vladimir Putin. The heated exchange took place at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

The debate saw Trump and Harris clash over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Harris asserted that Putin “would eat Trump for lunch” and claimed that if Trump were president, Putin would already be in Kyiv.

Trump did not commit to supporting Ukraine’s victory but claimed he could broker peace. “I want the war to stop,” Trump said.

“I want to save lives.” He even suggested he could resolve the conflict before his potential presidency, repeating a claim that he could end the war within 24 hours.

Harris countered by saying, “The reason Donald Trump says this war would be over in 24 hours is that he would just give it up — and that’s not who we are as Americans.” She warned that if Putin’s invasion succeeded, his next target would be Poland.

Responding to the debate, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov urged the candidates to “leave our president’s name alone,” and remarked that both parties in the U.S. maintain a hostile stance towards Russia. He emphasized that Putin’s name is increasingly used in U.S. political rhetoric, which the Kremlin finds deeply troubling.

Interestingly, Putin had recently made a light-hearted comment about Harris, suggesting support for her, as reported by Reuters. He noted her infectious laughter indicated “everything is fine with her,” and implied she might prevent further sanctions against Russia.

The Kremlin did not respond to a request for additional comments.
