Philadelphia Officer Dies 80 Days After Traffic Stop Shooting; Suspect Faces Murder Charges

Additional Coverage:

On September 11, the Philadelphia Police Department announced the passing of Officer Jaime Roman, who had been in the hospital for over 80 days after being shot during a traffic stop. Roman died Tuesday evening at Temple University Hospital surrounded by his family.

Officer Roman was critically injured on June 22 in the Kensington area of Philadelphia when he and his partner pulled over a blue Toyota Echo. The vehicle lacked registration and insurance, and the 36-year-old driver, Ramon Vazquez, did not have a license.

As Roman and his partner were preparing to impound the car, they discovered an empty gun holster on the floor. Vazquez fled on foot, and during the chase, he allegedly fired three shots, one of which struck Roman in the neck.

Roman’s partner rendered aid instead of continuing the chase, and Roman was subsequently hospitalized until his passing.

During a press conference held Wednesday morning to announce Roman’s death, Mayor Cherelle Parker shared that she was present at the hospital with other officers when they received the news. Mayor Parker promised ongoing support for Roman’s family and his fellow officers, acknowledging the daily sacrifices made by police personnel. She declared that city flags would be flown at half-mast to honor Roman’s memory and vowed that his death would not be in vain.

Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel spoke about the frequent need to confiscate vehicles like the one involved in the shooting, emphasizing that the tragedy could have been avoided if the suspect had complied. Bethel was with Roman during his final moments and described him as a “fighter” who battled valiantly against his injuries.

Ramon Vazquez was later apprehended by police at an E. Schiller Street residence, where they also recovered a firearm believed to be used in the shooting. The investigation is ongoing, and Vazquez is expected to be charged with murder.

Officer Jaime Roman is survived by his wife, a 7-year-old daughter, and a 4-year-old son.
