Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales Endorses Kamala Harris

On Thursday, Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales threw his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris for president, citing concerns over the “serious threat” that Donald Trump poses to the rule of law. In an opinion piece for Politico Magazine, Gonzales stated, “As the United States approaches a critical election, I can’t remain silent as Donald Trump — arguably the most significant threat to the rule of law in a generation — seeks to return to the White House. For this reason, despite being a Republican, I am endorsing Kamala Harris for president.”

Gonzales, who held the Attorney General role under George W. Bush and served as White House counsel, highlighted his belief that Harris is “best suited, capable, and determined to unite the country in a manner consistent with the rule of law.” He referenced her recent appearances at the Democratic National Convention and on debate stages as evidence of her qualifications.

Having resigned in 2007 amidst allegations of misleading Congress and a scandal involving the firing of nine U.S. attorneys, Gonzales emphasized the importance of electing a leader with strong character. He criticized Congress for being unable or unwilling to curb abuses of executive power effectively and pointed to a Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity that he believes could enable a president to use official actions for personal gain.

“Power is addictive,” Gonzales said, “and Trump’s rhetoric and actions suggest he may not respect the presidency’s power appropriately. Instead, he might abuse it for personal and political benefit rather than the nation’s good.”

Gonzales cited the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack as a telling example of Trump’s failure to uphold his duty, and mentioned the various convictions and charges against Trump as indicators of his disregard for the rule of law. He expressed skepticism about Trump’s ability to wield presidential power with integrity.

Regarding Harris, Gonzales admitted that her governing style remains uncertain but encouraged voters to trust in her character and judgment. He praised her record as a prosecutor and California’s Attorney General, suggesting it demonstrates a clear commitment to justice and the rule of law.

This endorsement adds to a growing list of prominent Republicans, including former Vice President Dick Cheney and his daughter, former Rep. Liz Cheney, who have recently supported Harris.
