Rory McIlroy Leads Over Matteo Manassero in Exciting Irish Open Finish

Additional Coverage:

Rory McIlroy has always held Royal County Down, the renowned golf course in Northern Ireland, in high esteem. It’s the venue for this week’s Amgen Irish Open on the DP World Tour. However, McIlroy’s history at this course isn’t so rosy, with a loss in the 2007 Walker Cup and a disastrous first-round 80 leading to a missed cut at this event nine years ago.

That may change on Sunday.

On Saturday, for the second round in a row, McIlroy nailed an eagle on the opening hole – this time hitting his second shot from the rough to within six feet. Although he ended with a bogey at the par-5 18th hole, his 2-under 69 secured him a one-shot lead over Matteo Manassero. The 2016 Irish Open champion and fans’ favorite now stands at 6 under.

“I’m excited to have a shot at winning,” McIlroy said. “My past performances in Northern Ireland haven’t been great. I need to stay in the moment, but I’m eager to give it my best.”

The challenging course, worsened by strong winds, has resulted in high scores this week. McIlroy has been focused on making as many pars as possible, achieving only two birdies in his third round. The best moment came on the par-4 13th hole, where he hit his approach from the fescue 160 yards onto the green’s slope, leading to a 32-foot birdie putt that gave him the solo lead for the first time.

If McIlroy wins on Sunday, he would reach No. 1 in the DPWT’s Race to Dubai rankings. Manassero, who scored a 72 in the third round following a 66 on Friday, could rise to fourth place if he finishes second.

Tied for third at 3 under are Bob MacIntyre, Erik van Rooyen, Rasmus Hojgaard, and Jordan Spieth. Todd Clements, who started the day one shot back and played alongside McIlroy, struggled with an 85.

“That’s how it goes out there,” said Manassero, who bogeyed his second to last hole before a 50-foot two-putt for par at the final hole. “I would have preferred to avoid being beaten by the course, but I’m pleased with finishing with two 5s.”

To stop McIlroy from triumphing in his third attempt at Royal County Down, it’s going to take a strong finish.
