Fans eagerly awaited to see how Hollywood icons Meryl Streep and Martin Short would navigate the 2024 Emmy Awards amid ongoing dating rumors.

The Oscar-winning actress, 75, and the comedian, 74, chose not to walk the red carpet together but were seen sitting side by side at the awards ceremony held on Sunday, September 15, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. They were spotted smiling and whispering to each other while watching Jeremy Allen White win the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in “The Bear.”

Both Streep and Short were nominated for their performances in “Only Murders in the Building.” Streep was up for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of Loretta Durkin but lost to Liza Colón-Zayas from “The Bear.”

Other nominees in the category included Carol Burnett from “Palm Royale,” Hannah Einbinder from “Hacks,” and Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph from “Abbott Elementary.” Short, nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Oliver Putnam, competed against White, his co-star Steve Martin, Matt Berry from “What We Do in the Shadows,” Larry David from “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai from “Reservation Dogs.”

Their appearance at the Emmys follows several months of speculation about their offscreen relationship, which gained steam after they were seen together at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. In January, a representative for Short dismissed the dating rumors, saying, “They are just very good friends, nothing more.”

Two months later, Short spoke about acting with Streep, calling it a career highlight. “It was one of the great thrills of my life,” he said at a For Your Consideration event in March. “On the first day of shooting, I actually felt nervous because I was working with Meryl Streep.”

In August, romance rumors resurfaced when the pair were seen holding hands at the season 4 premiere afterparty of their show in Los Angeles. Later that month, Short praised his relationship with Streep in an interview with Extra, stating, “It’s been a friendship that always grows when you work with someone and love that person.”

Streep ended her 45-year marriage to Don Gummer, confirming their separation in October 2023 after being apart for more than six years. The couple has four children: Henry, 44; Mamie, 41; Grace, 38; and Louisa, 33.

Short was married to Nancy Dolman from 1980 until her passing from ovarian cancer in August 2010. They adopted three children together: Katherine, 40; Oliver, 38; and Henry, 35.

The friendship between Streep and Short continues to flourish, both professionally and personally, as they navigate their starring roles on and off the screen.
