Former Fire Department Chiefs Arrested in Corruption Probe

Two retired chiefs from New York City’s Fire Department have been arrested after a year-long investigation. Brian Cordasco and Anthony Saccavino allegedly abused their positions by taking bribes in exchange for preferential treatment for individuals and companies.

Bribes for Expedited Inspections

As heads of the Fire Prevention Bureau, Saccavino and Cordasco controlled the inspections of fire safety systems in buildings. They used this authority to create a "VIP lane" for those willing to pay bribes. They allegedly received $190,000 in bribes to expedite inspections.

Abuse of Power

Federal prosecutors allege that the chiefs abused their power to prioritize safety inspections for those who paid. This compromised the integrity of the fire safety system and eroded public trust.

Investigation and Arrests

The FBI and New York City Department of Investigation conducted searches earlier this year, leading to the chiefs being placed on modified duty. On Monday, they were arrested at their homes.

No Compromised Building Safety

While the scheme did not compromise building safety, it tarnished the reputation of the Fire Department. The investigation arose as an offshoot of a probe into Mayor Eric Adams’ campaign.

Department Cooperation

The Fire Department has pledged full cooperation with the investigation. Commissioner Robert Tucker emphasized that ethical conduct is expected of all members.
