US Soldier Sentenced for Crossing into North Korea

Travis King, a US soldier who crossed into North Korea last year, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for desertion and other charges. However, he has already served 338 days, so he is now free.

King pleaded guilty to five charges, including desertion, assault, and disobeying orders. He was also dishonorably discharged.

The defense argued that King faced racism in his unit and that he was encouraged to join the Army by a recruiter. King’s actions occurred 60 years after another US soldier, James Dresnok, defected to North Korea.
