Prosecutors: Routh Should Face Attempted Assassination Charge

Additional Coverage:

Prosecutors intend to seek a grand jury indictment against Ryan Wesley Routh for attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump.

Routh was previously charged with possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number. He remains detained, as he poses a flight risk and danger to the community.

Prosecutors presented evidence that Routh had a list of Trump’s appearances and traveled near his golf course and Mar-a-Lago resort before his arrest. They also revealed a letter he allegedly sent stating he had attempted to assassinate Trump but failed.

The Secret Service spotted a gun barrel near the sixth green where Trump was playing golf, leading to Routh’s arrest. Prosecutors described the location as a "sniper position."

The investigation revealed that the rifle allegedly possessed by Routh contained a round in the chamber, indicating it was ready to fire. He had an extended magazine with 11 rounds.

Routh allegedly spoke to an acquaintance after his arrest, indicating he was aware he was being recorded and apologizing. The acquaintance expressed shock and horror.

Prosecutors believe Routh’s actions constitute a "month-long plan to assassinate the former president." The investigation continues, with authorities exploring Routh’s social media, criminal history, and potential motives.
