Kupfer’s Killer Sentenced to Life in Prison

Shawn Laval Smith, the perpetrator of the tragic murder of UCLA student Brianna Kupfer in 2022, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Smith was convicted of murder and lying in wait following the brutal stabbing of Kupfer in a high-end furniture store. A Superior Court Judge rejected his insanity plea.

The horrific incident occurred while Kupfer was working alone in the store when Smith entered and attacked her. He fled the scene, but was later apprehended by police.

Kupfer, a talented architectural design student, was remembered for her kindness and love of learning. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón expressed outrage at the loss of her life and the dreams that were stolen from her.

The prosecution team applauded the court’s ruling, emphasizing Smith’s accountability for his heinous actions and the justice served to Kupfer’s loved ones.
