Barbie Embraces Diwali with First-Ever Festival-Inspired Doll

In honor of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights celebrated in early November, Mattel has unveiled a new Barbie doll. The doll is a collaboration with Indian fashion designer Anita Dongre and showcases traditional Indian elements.

The Barbie Diwali doll wears a cropped top, floral vest, and ankle-length skirt, adorned with symbols of strength and beauty. Dongre aimed to blend modern style with traditional craftsmanship in the doll’s design.

Lalit Agarwal, country manager for Mattel India, expressed the company’s desire to highlight India’s cultural heritage through the doll while embracing diversity. Diwali is a five-day celebration marked by gatherings, fireworks, and prayers.

Barbie’s evolution toward greater representation continues with this doll. Once known for its stereotypical depictions, Barbie now offers a wide range of skin tones, hairstyles, and body types. The brand has also celebrated feminist icons, including Celia Cruz and Bessie Coleman.

According to Mattel’s chief brand officer, Lisa McKnight, Barbie is no longer a singular reflection of beauty but represents a diverse array of perspectives and identities.
