Hurricane Delays Prompt Calls to Extend Voter Registration

Additional Coverage:

Hurricane Helene has left voters in affected states scrambling to register before upcoming deadlines.

In North Carolina, election officials maintain the October 11th deadline, although this could change after next week’s legislative session. Voters can still register during the in-person voting period starting October 17th.

In Georgia, advocacy groups are urging officials to extend the deadline past Monday due to the widespread damage caused by the storm. The Secretary of State’s office is assessing the situation but has not yet announced any changes.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has made some election modifications but has not extended the voter registration deadline. The NAACP Legal Defense Fund has requested an extension in Florida as well.

In South Carolina, a judge has extended the deadline to October 14th after a lawsuit filed by the state Democratic Party. The Election Commission lacked the authority to make this change independently.
