New Zealand Naval Ship Sinks Off Samoa

A New Zealand naval vessel has caught fire and sunk off the coast of Samoa. The HMNZS Manawanui, a dive and hydrographic ship, was conducting a survey when it ran aground.

All 75 crew and passengers were safely evacuated before the ship capsized and sank. The incident is under investigation, but authorities are working to mitigate environmental impacts and assist with salvage operations.

The ship, which cost around $63 million, was acquired by the New Zealand government in 2018 and entered service in 2019. The commanding officer’s quick decision to evacuate likely prevented loss of life.

Passengers and crew will be flown back to New Zealand from Samoa on Sunday. The New Zealand Defense Force expressed gratitude to all involved in the rescue efforts.
