Ethel Kennedy Suffers Stroke, Hospitalized

Ethel Kennedy, the widow of former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, suffered a stroke last week. The 96-year-old is receiving treatment in the hospital and is said to be comfortable.

Kennedy, the sister-in-law of former President John F. Kennedy, is a human rights advocate.

She founded the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights nonprofit after her husband’s assassination in 1968.

Her grandson, former Representative Joe Kennedy III, said his grandmother “is a strong woman who has led a remarkably fulfilling life.”

Kennedy became a widow at 40 with 10 children and while pregnant with her eleventh. She never remarried. She is known for her involvement in various human rights organizations, including the Coalition of Gun Control.

In 2014, former President Barack Obama awarded Kennedy the Congressional Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Obama praised her enduring faith and hope despite experiencing unimaginable loss and grief.

The Kennedy family is requesting privacy during this time.
