Texas Plant Chemical Leak Kills One, Injures Five

A chemical leak at a PEMEX facility in Deer Park, Texas, has claimed the lives of two individuals and sent more than two dozen to the hospital.

The leak occurred at a PEMEX refinery processing unit on Highway 225 at approximately 4:40 p.m. Officials initially identified it as an unknown chemical but later confirmed it to be hydrogen sulfide, a flammable and toxic gas.

A shelter-in-place order was issued for the 34,495 residents of Deer Park, but it was lifted a few hours later. Highway 225 was also closed in both directions near Beltway 8 due to the emergency.

PEMEX has stated that emergency protocols were activated following the leak and notifications were sent to authorities. They claim that safety measures were taken to mitigate the impact and no community impact has been reported.
