Inseparable since childhood, sisters Amaris and Dominique Elston faced a life-altering challenge when Dominique was diagnosed with kidney failure. Determined to help her sister, Amaris stepped forward to donate a kidney, despite the potential risks.

Overcoming Obstacles

With Black Americans disproportionately represented on kidney transplant waiting lists, Amaris knew that time was of the essence. As a medical school student, she underwent extensive testing to ensure she was a compatible donor. To her relief, she was a match.

A Gift of Life

In 2018, the sisters underwent surgeries at Vanderbilt University’s Transplant Center. Amaris’s operation was successful, and within 24 hours, Dominique showed remarkable improvement. Amaris’s sacrifice not only saved her sister’s life but also inspired her to pursue a career in nursing.

A Shared Journey in Medicine

Together, the sisters have become the first in their family to enter the medical field. Amaris is a neurology resident at the Medical University of South Carolina, while Dominique is a neurology intensive care unit nurse at UAB.

Despite being physically separated, their bond remains unbreakable. They share the unique experience of supporting each other through life’s challenges, including Dominique’s illness and their journey into medicine.

A Legacy of Love

Amaris and Dominique’s story is a testament to the extraordinary love and resilience that can exist between siblings. Their unwavering support for each other has not only saved a life but also created a lasting legacy of hope and inspiration.
