Bannon to be Released From Prison Next Week

Additional Coverage:

Steve Bannon, a prominent conservative and former Trump ally, will be released from prison next week as scheduled. Bannon had hoped for an early release, but the Bureau of Prisons denied his request due to time constraints.

Bannon was sentenced to four months in prison for contempt of Congress after refusing to cooperate with the House January 6th Committee. He argued executive privilege, claiming he could not disclose certain communications.

Bannon’s daughter has accused the government of stalling his release to prevent him from supporting Trump in the upcoming midterm elections.

Bannon was a staunch supporter of Trump’s claims of election fraud and was believed to have been involved in the January 6th riot. The House referred the matter to the Justice Department, which indicted Bannon for contempt.

Bannon’s lawyers sought probation, while prosecutors requested a six-month prison sentence. He ultimately received four months in October 2022 but did not report to prison until July due to numerous attempts to delay his sentence.
