Ballot Box Attacks Raise Concerns

Authorities in Oregon and Washington warn of possible future attacks on ballot boxes after a series of arson incidents. Two boxes in Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, were torched early Monday.

A white male between 30 and 40 is suspected of targeting the boxes, having skills in metal fabrication and welding. Police believe he may continue his attacks.

Investigation and Precautions

The FBI is assisting in the investigation. Police have released photos of a suspect vehicle, a tan or light-gray Volvo S-60.

Extra patrols and a high police presence will be implemented around ballot boxes to deter further incidents.

Damaged Ballots and Replacement

In the Portland incident, three ballots were damaged, but 409 were saved by a fire suppressant. In Vancouver, 475 damaged ballots were identified, with the fire suppression device partially effective.

Election officials in both states assure affected voters that replacement ballots will be provided promptly.

Similar Incident and Motives

The Monday incidents resemble an earlier attack on a ballot box in Vancouver on October 8. That device had “Free Gaza” and “Free Palestine” markings, leading to speculation about possible political motivations. However, it remains unclear if the attacker is a genuine activist or attempting to exploit existing divisions.
