NYC Legalizes Jaywalking

Additional Coverage:

Starting in February, jaywalking in New York City will no longer be a crime. The City Council approved a bill to decriminalize it, which became law after Mayor Adams did not take action.

Jaywalking will still be allowed, but pedestrians won’t have the right of way. If hit by a car, they may be responsible for injuries or damages to others. They may also be liable for their own medical costs.

The new law aims to address racial disparities in jaywalking citations, with Black and Latino people receiving a disproportionate number of tickets. It will also free up police officers to focus on other public safety issues.

Jaywalking has been illegal in New York City since 1958 and was punishable by a $300 fine.
