Suspect Charged with Terrorism, Hate Crime in Jewish Man Shooting

An illegal immigrant, Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, 22, has been charged with terrorism and a hate crime for shooting a Jewish man in Chicago. The victim was wearing a kippah while walking to a synagogue.

Police Chief Larry Snelling said the shooting was “deeply personal” to the Jewish community and that violence motivated by hate and bigotry would not be tolerated.

Slew of Charges

Abdallahi is facing over a dozen felony charges, including attempted murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and battery. He allegedly shot at police officers after the shooting.

Illegal Immigration Status

Abdallahi is a Mauritanian national who was released into the U.S. in 2023. Despite an ICE detainer request, local authorities did not cooperate due to “sanctuary” policies.

Digital Evidence

Prosecutors say digital evidence from Abdallahi’s phone shows he specifically targeted the Jewish community. Detectives gathered evidence to establish a case.

No Pressure

Police emphasized that the charges were not based on public pressure or media attention, but on evidence gathered through a timely investigation.
