Iranian Student Arrested for Anti-Dress Code Protest
A female student at Tehran’s Islamic Azad University has been arrested for stripping off her clothes in protest against Iran’s strict dress code. A video circulating online shows the woman in her underwear and without a headscarf, walking around the campus.
The university’s public relations director confirmed the arrest, claiming the student committed an “indecent act.” However, some student groups allege that her clothing was torn by security forces after she was harassed for not wearing a headscarf.
Amnesty International has condemned the arrest and called for the woman’s immediate release. The organization also raised concerns about allegations of beatings and sexual violence during her arrest.
The incident highlights the escalating crackdown on women in Iran, particularly regarding the mandatory hijab law. The so-called “Noor Plan” encourages human rights violations against women for violating dress code regulations.
This crackdown is a response to the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests that erupted in Iran after the death of Mahsa Amini, who died in police custody for violating hijab laws. Over 550 people, including women and children, have been killed during the protests.
