43 rhesus macaque monkeys escaped from a research facility in Yemassee, South Carolina on Wednesday when a caretaker failed to properly secure a door.
As of Saturday, one of the escaped monkeys has been recovered unharmed. However, a significant number remain at large near the facility, jumping over the fence.
The monkeys are being monitored and fed by staff, and traps and thermal imaging cameras have been deployed to assist in their capture.
The recovery effort is ongoing, and local residents are advised to keep their doors and windows locked for safety. The monkeys can be easily startled and should not be approached.
Yemassee is located about 60 miles west of Charleston.
