Judith Jamison, a renowned dancer and former artistic director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, has passed away at 81. Her graceful and expressive performances left an enduring mark on the dance world.

Jamison joined the Ailey Theater in 1965, breaking barriers as a Black ballerina. She became a muse for Ailey, starring in his iconic works “Revelations” and “Cry.” After 15 years with the company, she performed on Broadway and as a guest artist.

Returning as artistic director for two decades, Jamison transformed the Ailey Theater into a thriving dance company. Her leadership and artistry transcended race and gender, inspiring countless dancers.
