Cuban Authorities Arrest Protesters Amid Power Outages

Cuban authorities have detained individuals for disorderly conduct following protests over prolonged power outages. The Attorney General’s office has initiated criminal proceedings for offenses such as assault and vandalism, citing injuries sustained by authorities.

The arrests occurred in Havana, Mayabeque, and Ciego de Avila, where protests erupted after 24-hour electricity disruptions. The organization Justicia11J has confirmed three arrests in Ciego de Avila.

These incidents come amidst an energy crisis, compounded by recent hurricanes and an earthquake. Frustrations have escalated due to economic hardships, soaring prices, and shortages of basic necessities.

Protests have been met with crackdowns by the Cuban government in the past. In July 2021, mass demonstrations over food shortages led to over 1,000 arrests and charges against protesters. Smaller protests have occurred since then.
