California voters reject ban on prison labor

Additional Coverage:

California voters have rejected a measure that aimed to eliminate forced labor as a punishment for crimes. Proposition 6, which would have banned forced labor in all circumstances, failed to pass.

The failure of Proposition 6 follows the unsuccessful passage of two reparations-related bills earlier this year. These bills aimed to provide financial compensation to descendants of enslaved Black Americans. The bills faced opposition from those who feared Governor Gavin Newsom would veto them.
