On Saturday, masked demonstrators waving Nazi flags protested outside a production of “The Diary of Anne Frank” in Howell, Michigan. Witnesses reported hearing racist and antisemitic slurs.
Bobby Brite, a veteran who witnessed the event, said attendees were shocked and frightened. He estimated that 50 to 60 people were too afraid to leave the building without an escort.
Sheriff Michael J. Murphy confirmed a disturbance call and stated that the protesters were asked to leave.
They continued to demonstrate across the street, resulting in an argument with another individual. No physical altercations occurred.
Despite the incident, the play resumed and was performed again on Sunday without incident. The community theater group emphasized the importance of telling Anne Frank’s story to prevent future atrocities.
The Anti-Defamation League’s Michigan chapter condemned the incident, standing with the American Legion and Howell Township in rejecting hate in their community.
