Ukrainian forces have carried out an attack in the Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula, killing a high-ranking naval officer.

The Security Service of Ukraine claimed responsibility for a car bomb attack that killed Valery Trankovsky, a first-rank captain in Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.

Trankovsky was reportedly responsible for launching cruise missiles from the Black Sea at civilian targets in Ukraine.

The attack occurred in the eastern Gagarin district of Sevastopol around 2 a.m. Eastern.

Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened an investigation into the incident as a terrorist attack.

The blast in Crimea comes amid heavy missile and drone strikes by Russia on Kyiv and reports of North Korean soldiers joining Russian forces in combat in the Kursk region.
