Giuliani’s lawyers quit defamation suit

Additional Coverage:

Rudy Giuliani’s attorneys have abandoned him in his defamation case after accusations from the plaintiffs’ lawyers that he has been hiding assets.

Kenneth Caruso and David Labkowski, Giuliani’s former lead counsel, cited a “fundamental disagreement” with their client. They invoked a rule allowing attorneys to withdraw due to the client’s refusal to cooperate or insistence on pursuing unwarranted claims.

The plaintiffs’ lawyers claim that Giuliani has transferred and concealed assets to avoid handing over property, as ordered by the court. Documents suggest he has relied on an associate to pay his debts.

Last week, Judge Lewis Liman ordered Giuliani to surrender specific assets or face sanctions. Giuliani subsequently pleaded for financial assistance, claiming he cannot afford basic necessities.

After a jury awarded $150 million to the plaintiffs in a defamation case last year, Giuliani filed for bankruptcy. The bankruptcy has since been dismissed, allowing the plaintiffs to pursue collection efforts.

Giuliani has been ordered to hand over his penthouse, cash, watches, and a Mercedes Benz. Despite facing contempt of court charges, Giuliani maintains that he does not regret his actions, but later retracted that statement.
