Craig Melvin will replace Hoda Kotb as co-anchor of NBC’s “TODAY” show, alongside Savannah Guthrie. Melvin, who currently anchors the 3rd hour of “TODAY,” will take over on January 13th.
Kotb, who has co-anchored “TODAY” since 2018, announced her departure in September. She said she felt it was time for a change after turning 60.
Melvin expressed his excitement and gratitude for the new role, saying he has been blessed with a lifetime of opportunities. Kotb praised Melvin as being “literally made for this job” and having all the qualities needed to excel.
Guthrie welcomed Melvin to the co-anchor position, calling him talented, hardworking, and worthy. Weatherman Al Roker congratulated Melvin, saying he had witnessed his growth as a journalist and as a person.
Melvin acknowledged Kotb’s contributions to “TODAY,” saying she helped save the show. He also expressed his admiration for Guthrie’s intelligence and humor.
NBC News executive Libby Leist said they are thrilled to have Melvin as co-anchor and that he will continue to co-host the 3rd hour of “TODAY.” The fourth hour of the show will be renamed “TODAY with Jenna & Friends” and feature a rotating cast of co-hosts until a permanent host is selected.
Melvin has been with NBC News for nearly 14 years and has covered various major events, including breaking news, the Olympics, the Super Bowl, and presidential interviews.
