Ukraine’s Navy Unveils Dazzle Camouflage on Vessels
The Ukrainian Navy has released images of its vessels adorned with a distinctive paint job reminiscent of World War I-era tactics. Dazzle camouflage aims to confuse enemies by making it difficult to determine a ship’s speed and direction.
Historical Origins and Limited Effectiveness
Dazzle camouflage originated during World War I to counter enemy submarines. However, naval experts believe it has limited use in modern warfare, particularly against radar-guided threats. Nonetheless, it may provide an advantage against optical sensors on drones.
Russia’s Use and Ukraine’s Need
Russia recently employed a similar tactic by painting blocks of black on its ships to appear smaller. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s navy lacks large vessels and relies heavily on small boats. The cooperation between Denmark and Ukraine aims to bolster Ukraine’s naval capabilities, including the removal of mines and the development of a modern fleet.
