Tomlin tells Pickens to mature

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens drew criticism from his coach for unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in Sunday’s win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Coach Mike Tomlin emphasized that Pickens needs to mature and control his emotions, especially in high-stakes divisional games.

Pickens, who had a strong performance with 74 receiving yards and a touchdown, incurred two 15-yard penalties. He threw the ball at Bengals defenders after a catch and made a gesture that was interpreted as a gun signal.

Despite the penalties, Pickens defended his actions, claiming the officials misinterpreted his gestures and that referees should be responsible for making correct calls. He also suggested that the game was officiated unfairly, calling it “ticky-tack.”

Pickens has a history of incidents, including a fine for an explicit message on his eye black and an ejection for a late hit. He expressed frustration over a non-call in Sunday’s game, but acknowledged that holds are a part of the game.

Teammates, including Broderick Jones and Russell Wilson, talked to Pickens about controlling his emotions. Wilson advised him that as a top receiver, he should expect scrutiny and respond calmly. Pickens is still learning, but his coaches and teammates are confident he will improve his discipline.
