Lieutenant General Christopher Donahue Confirmed to Lead US Army in Europe and Africa
Lieutenant General Christopher Donahue, who gained recognition as the last American soldier to leave Afghanistan in 2021, has been confirmed to lead US Army forces in Europe and Africa.
Donahue commanded the 82nd Airborne Division during the withdrawal from Afghanistan. President Biden nominated him for promotion to four-star general, but his confirmation was delayed due to a hold by Senator Markwayne Mullin.
Mullin, a vocal critic of the withdrawal, has held Donahue and other officials responsible for the deaths of 13 US service members and Afghan civilians during the suicide bombing at the Kabul airport.
Despite Mullin’s objections, the Senate unanimously confirmed Donahue’s promotion on Monday. He will now take over as commander of US Army Europe-Africa.
Donahue has held various leadership positions, including commanding the Special Operations Joint Task Force Afghanistan and serving as the Joint Chiefs of Staff’s deputy director for special operations and counterterrorism.
