An Oklahoma City police officer has been charged with aggravated assault and battery after a violent traffic stop.
On October 27, 2024, Sgt. Joseph Gibson arrested 71-year-old Lich Vu for an alleged illegal U-turn. Body camera footage shows a heated argument between the two, leading to Gibson slamming Vu to the ground.
Vu sustained serious injuries, including a fractured orbit, neck, and brain bleed. District Attorney Vicki Zemp Behenna determined Gibson’s actions were excessive force, citing Vu’s age and the severity of his injuries.
The Vietnamese community has expressed outrage over the incident. The Oklahoma City Fraternal Order of Police supports Gibson, claiming he followed protocol and was assaulted by Vu.
Gibson faces up to five years in prison if convicted. The case has raised concerns about the use of force by police officers.
