UnitedHealthcare CEO Killed in Manhattan
On December 4th, UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot in New York City. Surveillance cameras captured the incident, and police have released clear images of the suspect.
Suspect Remains at Large
Despite a citywide manhunt, the gunman remains at large. Police have searched for him by bus, but believe he may have left the city. The lack of capture has highlighted surveillance limitations, despite New York City’s extensive camera network.
Extensive Surveillance in New York
Since the 9/11 attacks, surveillance has increased in the United States. New York City has over 25,000 surveillance cameras, and the NYPD uses facial recognition software. The city also has a “community-based security camera integration platform” and monitors the Neighbors app.
NYPD Gathering Evidence
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch says the NYPD has collected forensic evidence and is conducting a camera canvass. They have also found a backpack in Central Park that may belong to the suspect.
Hope for Capture
Former NYPD sergeant Joseph Giacolone believes police will eventually apprehend the suspect using surveillance videos, cellphone records, and internet data. He says they know his movements and will eventually find him.
